There are so many game streaming services popping up, with so many idiosyncrasies, that it’s hard to keep it all straight. In this video, James takes Linus through a tour testing GeForce Now, Google Stadia, Microsoft Project Xcloud, and Sony PlayStation Now to see which one makes the most sense...except we didn't try Shadow.

so i have a laptop so would you reccomend nvidia shield ? because i am saving up for a gaming pc and it would be cool to just buy games instead of a gaming pc, would save me alot of money

Destiny on stadia was looking bad definitely because of the HDR. The HDR on that game doesn’t work most of the time and when it does it can look wonky.

  • Rob van den Berg

Sometimes I use Steam remote play, that works as long as the game works. Mostly. And if the game crashes or freezes you need to up two stairs to reset it.

As a gamer. I have used both Nvidia's and Sony's services, and hands down Nvidia wins, BUT I would probably never use because there is no service that would convince me to go stream a game over buying a game itself.... Its just not viable, I don't game enough to warrant a monthly billing cycle, but Nvidias free service is actually pretty damn amazing, having a shield I have streamed quite a few games over it, and have been very impressed. Nvidia's beats sony's 100%. Sony had consistantly dissapointed me with game selection, many games I wanted to play just were not available, but the absolute worst was PS4's TERRIBLE wifi/lan connection. I run a 100/100 Fios connection in home, and a 1gbps throughput in house, this is important as I run multiple 4k bluray rips at 100 megabit rate files, and sometimes even steam stream from my PC to my shield from time to time [I actually emulated my legally purchased version of BOTW on WiiU, emulated, and upscaled to 4k, far better graphics then my legally purchased Switch version]. Anyways back to my point, PS4's Wifi chip SUCKS so bad that it can't even get 10mbps download lol, and on LAN its maxing out on 80mbps down, and 10mbps up. Sony is pretty notorious for skimping out on wifi chips and lan ports in their high end devices, my Bravia has the same exact issue. So anyone looking to know which one to go wtih, get a shield and a nvidia game stream, 100% the best.

What would the shield be like over WiFi streaming games from my pc which is also connected by WiFi

  • TheRealGamer

I find the latency on all of them completely intolerable. And unless you have a rock solid connection, you’ll occasionally get random resolution drops as it struggles to stream at full quality over a connection with a varying bandwidth

  • Notmi Relnam

From my perspective, you're needlessly wasting bandwidth to pay to get access to games that you lose all access to once you stop paying. Personally, I'd rather just only buy games when they're on sale and then have them forever. It's a lot cheaper in the long run, you don't risk the platform removing "old" games from the universal library that are no longer sufficiently popular, you retain full ownership of your save data and can mod the hell out of your experience, you don't have to buy the most baller internet package available just to pan the camera without laaaaaaaaag, you can keep games that would otherwise be pressured off the platform by virtue-signalling moral puritan busybodies with a Twitter account... If you're exclusively streaming games, you're beholden to the whims of the company that you're using. I'm struggling to find any scenario in which this would be worth it.

Stadia will fail, not enough subscriptions to keep it as a viable business, google will cut it, time will tell. GFN will rule them all. Like with the music industry and music streaming there were some artist that resisted Spotify for a short period, Microsoft need to get theirs on pc, playstation now is awesome, I recommend it. Ubisoft games are playable on GFN.

  • aaronsdavis

You can't beat the speed of light. Larry Elison was dead wrong and anyone who did art or played games knew he was wrong the moment he opened his mouth. No 3D game will be very good with just cloud computing, and no game at all will have good graphics. And, this will never work in Australia where the internet is utter garbage for most people compared to the rest of the world. In any case, I don't want to lose control of my own info. The only way to be in total control is to have the data on your own premises.

This might be old news now, but you can sideload the xCloud beta on an Android TV with built in Bluetooth to pair the xbox controller and aside from the laggy game selection screen and having to exit the app to change games it works remarkably well!

  • Marcello 42

the latency might be due to bluetooth :)

  • Marcello 42
    Marcello 42

Linus, what I'd love to see: What is the latency of streaming due to streaming? In fact: What would be the input lag if you'd run a virual machine locally and stream inside your computer? As well as streaming in house? So basically what quality could be possible possible with not to have falsified result due to connectivity / network at all? You made videos of checking wherever 144hz vs 240hz matters but I guess this could also be very interesting. edit: for sure also compare to the "normal" set-up :)

  • TheAirak

If you have money, just get a gaming rig and forget about this streaming crap and being tied down to a company like this... OWN your games and YOUR hardware..

Not sure what his logic was in saying "If you want to play it on your TV then just play Playstation". I thought the objective here was to show off the streaming service itself, so playing Playstation on the TV using Playstation Now to 'stream' games that you don't own, seems to me to be the best example of showing off the streaming service's benefits. Obviously, all the services have their pros and cons, but I personally am quite pleased with what Playstation Now offers in terms of allowing me to play games, quite satisfyingly, that I would otherwise not have intended to purchase independently. (ie. It's worth the price!)

Xbox game streaming also has streaming from the Xbox itself, which I use a lot, since my parents use the TV a lot of the time. It works well with 5G wifi, and it works better on my phone.

Stadia is playing the game for you. It's the dumbest console, eats all your bandwith, has a huge latency that is only gotten around by you not even playing the game for parts of it.
