According to Midland County officials as of ~3pm (EST) 5/20/2020, the Sanford dam may still be somewhat intact but they can't tell because it's underwater (they're using the term "failed" because it's spilling over, not necessarily because the structure has collapsed). Latest images of the Sanford dam appear to show overflow limited to the emergency spillway area. The current hope is that the dam itself will hold long enough for the upstream flow from the Wixom lake breach to recede. If the Sanford dam fails, areas downstream are looking at 500-year flood levels. Local and state police have already begun staging in a number of downstream areas, presumably to facilitate evacuations if the dam fails.

What no one seems to be paying attention to is how the dams work you see what happens is when the storm comes in the lake gets deep the alarms go off did you hear that part of the alarms go off and when the alarms are ignored you create a flood and a problem for the news to switch subjects! The problem I’m seeing is no one is mentioning about the people working at the dams letting the alarms run or shutting the alarms off without opening the doors and letting the lake out! Am I the only one who has ever seen how Adam works or do you just say the word damn a lot and you think you know about damns dammit!!!You’re all still leaning towards accident or natural wake the fk up🙏🙏🙏 WWG1WGA

@hay woods it seems to me that buildiing permits on the flood plains should never have been issued. Supervisors eager to increase the tax base must bear some responsibility. But greed turns a deaf ear to common sense.

i live on Lake Michigan and the water level has been the highest its been in years, so much erosion happens every day, i walk daily along the lake and see mudslides constantly and the water is brown because of all the mud going into the lake from the waves crashing the shoreline. I think there is more flooding to come this year for the Great Lakes area and the rivers in the Midwest.

I heard the State of Michigan forced the dam owners to keep the water high for the wild life, and the home owners on the lake. They (the State of Michigan) should be in part responsible for this mess. It seems as though we always want to blame the owners and not the government.

Boyce had their licenses pulled (some years back) to generate power, but were forbidden from lowering the water levels in these reservoirs, as it would have impacted the waterfront property values, and therefore property tax revenues. There is a lot of finger pointing right now.

This dam was lowered last fall. I wonder if allowing the earthen portion of the dam to dry out and then soak water back up had any affect to the destabilization? How about with the lowering of the water level over the winter changing to a lower frost line? Could either cause enough heaving to affect the core of the dam before it had a chance to stabilize with the recent (within days) refilling of the dam?

The emergency spillways should be contructed in that way, that they are not washed away by the water. And they should be wide enough, to prevent the water rising higher, keeping it under the level of the earth build dam area.

their biggest mistake is that the town had not been keeping up with all the emergency instructions to have a ten thousand men force to go in to drink up all the water. any sensible crtew leader would have known this from the beginning. THE TEN THOUSAND MAN CREW WOULD HAVE HAD EASY BACKUP PLANS TO ALLOW OTHER EMERGENCY CREWS WITH A HEADS UP.

The utility operating those dams could not afford to maintain them. So they lowered the water level to a safe height. but SOMEONE at the STATE told them to raise it because of some endangered fresh water muscle. It was Attorney General Dana Nessel

Edenville Dam did not fail from the flood. It failed from years of neglect. Following the federal government's 2018 license revocation, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) took oversight of the dam. EGLE determined that the dam was structurally sound.

I don't understand why the dams could not have been releasing large amounts of extra water a couple of days ahead of what they KNEW was coming... It was forecast well in advance, the radar showed it plain as can be.... They could have dropped those reservoirs by a good ten foot before the torrential downpours even started... Could they not? And if not, why not? Should that not be SOP? I can grab a box of crayons and explain it for them if they'd like... An awful lot of home owners on the receiving end of this mess sure would appreciate it...

It is the state of Michigan’s fault partially. The hydro company lowered the level of the water because the federal government said they were unsafe. That’s why the feds pulled their license to generate power. The state made them fill it back up because of some fresh water mussels or the like. State owns this one

Sanford Dam did not fail... Second and Edenville dams did.

  • Washington Hoax

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel ignored growing concerns about the dam’s ability to withstand heavy rain and focused instead on environmental conservation. Just three weeks before the flood, AG Dana Nessel sued the owner of the dam, Boyce Hydro Power LLC, alleging it illegally killed thousands of freshwater mussels by lowering water levels. As a result of pressure from the Michigan AG to keep water levels high, and inaction on safety concerns, the dam did not have an adequate spillway capacity and collapsed. Days after feds (EPA) revoked the dam’s license to generate power (2017), the State (Fascists Whitmer regime under Nessel) assumed oversight, inspected the dam and declared it and its spillways to be in “fair structural condition" and not lower the water by 8 feet.

Of all places to have this happen, ugh what a frign nightmare. I feel that the homeowners should not be the ones to come up with the money to fix ones property. It's the state governments fault for not updating the dams like they should have and they should be held accountable to pay for ALL of the damage that occurs from this. Though that is unlikely in this country where the people get fucked over all the damn time.

  • Dylan KS

EGLE and Whitmer administration is at fault. They told them to RAISE the water level despite the federal government telling Michigan this dam was going to fail. In March if this year Whitmers Michigan EGLE gave the dam an all clear after their inspection in response to federal warning. She is the kiss of death for Michigan.

We are not able to afford modern infrastructure in this country because of of our massive military involvement at virtually every other point on the globe. Even in peacetime we have troops fighting at multiple sites and hundreds of bases around the world. Our buildup of military force makes it necessary for other countries to increase their strength to counter us, causing a continuous escalation of arms threat. It is now high time to rethink our strategy for safety in the world. It has made us unable to maintain a pandemic response team and various other social and economic support mechanisms.

Just a thought. With all the dams in the world. Does anyone nowadays really know what to do or what will happen? Does that make sense?" Is there planned situations of dams failing? The only way to understand some of this stuff is to go through it. I assume most people look at a dan and go yep concrete wall & don't give it a 2nd thought. Never been any issues. Not gonna ever worry about it. I want to know the actual number of how many dams in the world are WAY outdated. And the excuse has always been no money too expensive. Well just look what will happen.
